Positive Behaviours for Learning - PBL
A good school is one that sets out clear expectations for behaviour and academic performance. Evelyn Scott School is a good school that works hard every single day to develop safe, respectful learners. These are our school’s values and each child understands the significance of safety, respect and learning. We explicitly teach these values to our children to promote positive behaviours and we clearly outline what each of these three values look like in all of the different parts of the school.
Across the Junior Campus, learners are awarded tokens with stamps of our logo on them (which we call 'warblers') if they demonstrate positive behaviours related to either safety, respect and/or learning. This is a very popular activity for our children and young people and they love coming up to the front office to put their warblers in the school boxes.
PBL Posters are displayed around the whole school. These Posters explicitly outline the types of safe, respectful, learner behaviour we expect to see in each area of the school regardless of the age and stage of each learner.
Below is an example of a Kindergarten PBL poster and a Senior Campus PBL Poster located in the learning spaces.
The best way to promote positive behaviours is to ensure that the curriculum in the classroom is engaging and this is in place at our school. Obviously, the teachers and Leadership Team address negative behaviours as they arise. We typically conference with learners if there are negative behaviours either in the classroom or on the playground. We will contact families as required. Additionally, we will implement strategies such as restorative meetings, mediations, time out and whole-of-class discussions as required. The language of our school values forms the basis of all of our conversations with children and young people about behaviour.
Through the course of the school year, we explicitly work with learners on embedding a range of routines that enable them to best demonstrate our school values. Understanding how we line up, how we all move through the school and how we use technology to support our learning are all examples of important routines and procedures that are practised.
